BCMM June 2026 Progress Report
System Registration Improvements
Foundation system registration now normalizes system names using BCMM's generated system index. When a SystemDef is created, the provided name is checked against the index and corrected to the canonical directory casing when a match is found. This ensures that registered Foundation system names match the actual system folder names.
BCMM also extends the base set lookup logic with a normalized system cache. Later, if a direct set lookup fails, BCMM retries the lookup using the cached fallback name. This makes system access effectively case-insensitive on the BCMM side and prevents capitalization mismatches from breaking startup or mission loading.
Cordy's Corner
Welcome back to Cordy’s Corner.
Planetoids in Bridge Commander seem to be a more difficult object to modify. It would seem that the Glows and Speculars are disabled for them and there is only 1 current workaround. This particular model has had many layers added to see what could be done to make the clouds appear more dynamic.
Below is an example of a Dynamic Planet showcasing this workaround.
This particular planetoid has been modified to use a textured animated layer, along with additional cloud layers using different blending modes, to achieve this effect.
Getting back to EarthFX for BCMM, this test was to showcase the usage of tiled landscape models. The water is a separate model and is configured to have some movement in one direction to try to show movement of waves in a rudimentary way. This particular one is done for now and construction of many other sets can commence.
New glitches are still being discovered since this type of modding has never been attempted before and is still being explored and documented.
Perhaps this can be made into a feature, but these are the results that continue to emerge, enabling us to think outside the box. BC may be a limited, outdated engine, but it's not done yet.
Here, a little fun with this discovery with animated textures.
Planets have a more substantial limitation in BC as the glows and speculars are disabled. What can be done about that? There is an alternative to the glows scripted into ship objects as “_glow”. This information will be released in due time.
Below is a video showcasing the modification of a planet without the use of NanoFX. Though there is a limitation, this simple model can still display something better than the standard. Limited does not mean it cannot still be dynamic.
This is where things start to get interesting. Though this is a short video, you can see the advancement in creating Gaseous Planets in BC. I wouldn't consider this perfect yet, but it's certainly getting closer.
